In a major step toward strengthening India’s electronics manufacturing base, the foundation stone for North India’s first semiconductor manufacturing unit will be laid on 21 February 2026 in Sector-28, Yamuna City area, Greater Noida.

What’s Happening?

  • The project is being set up by India Chip Pvt Ltd, a joint venture between tech giants HCL Group and Foxconn — two major names in the global technology and electronics ecosystem.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government has allocated 48 acres of land in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) area for this facility.

Inauguration Event

  • The official foundation laying ceremony is scheduled for 21 February 2026.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address the event via video conference.
  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Electronics & IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will be present in person to lead the ceremony.

What Will the Plant Do?

  • The facility will manufacture display driver integrated circuits (ICs) — critical chips used in mobile phones, laptops, computers, cars, and other electronic devices with display screens.
  • It is designed to produce around 36 million chip units per month, with a wafer capacity of 20,000 per month.

Investment & Jobs

  • The semiconductor unit represents an investment of about ₹3,706 crore, a significant boost to India’s semiconductor mission.
  • Once operational, the plant is expected to create approximately 3,780 direct jobs and many more indirect opportunities in the region.

Strategic Importance

This project is a key part of India’s ambition to become self-reliant in semiconductor manufacturing, reducing dependency on foreign imports and building a strong local tech ecosystem. Being close to the upcoming Noida International Airport and part of the expanding YEIDA industrial belt, the plant can attract further tech and electronics investments.

In short: Greater Noida is set to become a landmark location for India’s semiconductor industry. With top leadership participation and strong technological backing, this initiative could reshape the country’s role in the global tech manufacturing landscape!
